Day in the Life of a Fashion Professional
Think the fashion biz is pure glamour? Get a firsthand look at different fashion professionals, including a fashion stylist to find out what working in the industry is really like.
A Typical Day
A typical day for me includes waking up at about 4 a.m. (sometimes earlier) to get dressed and eat breakfast. Next I have to load up my car with clothes, clothes racks and other miscellaneous stylist equipment.
Then I have to drive to the location where I am needed, making sure that I am there at least 2 hours prior to call time so I will be ready for work. This includes steaming garments, making sure all outfits, shoes and accessories are together and visible for each talent to know what’s their’s. Action!, Cut!, May I go in?,Action!, Cut! and then That’s a Wrap!
The Best/WorstPart of the Job
The best part of my job is the travel, free clothes and working with a variety of people and settings. The worst part of my job are the long hours and dealing with some people’s attitude.
Fashion Tip
My favorite fashion secret is the top-stick or double stick tape. It’s amazing how a small piece of tape allows you to fit a garment on you the way you want and stays all day.
Designer beginnings
Ralph sold ties, Marc stocked shelves
Don’t worry if your fashion career hasn’t taken off yet, because some of the biggest names in fashion design got off to a modest start early in their careers.
Most of fashion’s biggest names weren’t born to design royalty: they weren’t raised in fashion capitals like New York or Paris (Todd Oldham and Tom Ford hail from Texas) and some didn’t even start out in fashion (Christian Dior was an art dealer) or go to school for it (Miuccia Prada has a PhD in Political Science).
Don’t miss these tidbits about some of the world’s top fashion designers:
Point of origin
* Kate Spade – Kansas City, MO
* Yves Saint Laurent – Oran, Algeria
* John Bartlett – Cincinnati, OH
* Anna Sui – Detroit, MI
* Texas – Todd Oldham, Tom Ford
* Bronx – Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein
